About Brogaidh's Dairy

Our Story

Brogaidh's Dairy is a family-run business which is being headed up by Gordon MacKay with the aim of delivering fresh milk and dairy produce right to islanders' doorsteps. Milk coming onto Lewis and Harris is already several days old before it arrives (via the weather-dependent ferry). At Brogaidh's Dairy we can produce our fresh milk that customers can be guaranteed is produced right here in Lewis all year round.

Gordon had always wanted to start a dairy herd from his previous experience working in dairy farms across Scotland. Having worked offshore in the North Sea for many years, the decline in the industry meant a lack of job security and this gave Gordon the push he needed to make his dream of starting his own dairy herd a reality.

Our Animals

We have been keen to secure the best livestock to produce our dairy products and now have a herd of pedigree Guernsey cows originally from the south of Wales as well as Ayrshire cows brought up from the renowned farmers, the Barr family in Campbelltown.

The cattle have loved it up here in Lewis - they're hardy breeds so are well suited to the island weather!

Our Dairy

After a busy few years preparing the livestock as well as building premises to house the herd, milking parlour and dairy plant, Brogaidh's Dairy is now getting ready to begin selling milk this summer.

Our new milk processing plant has been a large investment; with the bottling plant, pasteuriser, cream separator and homogeniser. Equipped with the latest technology, our Manus milking parlour is essential for animal health today and to ensure a premium product. Our cows are monitored with individual electric collars so the herd has its own nutritionist from our feed supplier and are given the best feed rations available while the computer will be monitoring the milking to pick up any problems an individual cow may have.
